“I need your undivided attention!”
Did you ever have a teacher who said that?
“Undivided” is the meaning of “pure” in this week’s scripture: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
God wants us to have hearts that are undivided, focused and devoted to God. This is the only way that we can really learn and grow in God’s love and be transformed by it.
There are many things that keep us from an undivided heart. Remember the story of Mary and Martha? Jesus came to visit the two sisters, and while Mary sat at Jesus’s feet and listened, Martha ran around cooking and cleaning and trying to get everything done. When she complained to Jesus that her sister wasn’t helping with the hospitality, Jesus responded, “Martha, Martha. You are worried and distracted by many things, but there is need of only one thing.”
We are worried and distracted by so many things- health concerns, bills, kids’ and spouses’ needs, career advancement, the cooking and cleaning…the list goes on and on. But rather than having our attention and our hearts focused on all of that, Jesus reminds us that only when we are intently looking for God, is God seen all around us.
In your family or with friends, discuss what “small” things eat up your time and attention. What keeps you from having quiet time to be devoted to listening to and serving God?
How can you as family members or friends help each other to carve out that time to purify your hearts, to give your undivided heart to God?
